Focus on how much you eat

No matter how healthy your diet is, portion sizes will always be important. At Spoonit® we believe that the key to losing weight and keeping it off is not focusing on what you eat, but how much.

A portion size is the amount of food that is recommended to be eaten at one sitting.  In the modern world our portion sizes are becoming super-sized by lots of different factors, some of which are out of our control. Plate size is increasing, bread is getting thicker. It’s cheaper to buy in bulk and a share bag of crisps easily becomes a packet for one. To give value for money restaurants and takeaways are serving bigger and bigger portions all in a bid to win our custom. Even the size of healthy foods such as fruit has increased. So with larger portions becoming the norm, our perception of what is normal is changing.

The concept of portion control is simple. Smaller portions = less calories eaten = weight loss. Everybody talks about just ‘cutting down’ and 'eating in moderation' but putting portion sizes into practice can be difficult. One of the main obstacles is knowing how much is right for you as an individual. Eating too much leads to weight gain but not eating enough can leave your body lacking in energy and essential nutrition and doesn’t always result in the long term weight loss people expect.

Portion control can be a complicated science. While you may reduce the portion size of some foods, you may actually increase the portion size of others. It’s all about balance and eating the right amount for you. For that you need the right information and some simple measuring utensils to help.

Portion control and a healthy balanced diet

Weight loss isn’t the only reason people look at portion sizes. Eating different food groups in the right amount is important to create an overall balanced diet which is important for optimal health and reducing your risk of conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

Benefits of portion control

So many diets today focus on cutting foods out. They often lack essential nutrition or have complicated ways to work out what and how much to eat. This isn’t good for your mind or your body. Very often people find diets difficult to maintain, they quickly return to bad eating habits, gain weight and the “diet cycle” starts again. Portion control offers an alternative to traditional diets where the focus is mainly on what you eat, allowing you flexibility with your choices.  Let’s stop the “you can’t” when it comes to eating and start with “you can”.

You can:

  • eat any type of food - so you can continue eating the foods you like
  • eat the same meals as the rest of your family -  perfectly portioned for you
  • understand portion control – with our easy to follow accompanying guides
  • stop feeling guilty about the food you eat – our products help you eat the right amounts
